Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jan 11, 2016 11:16 pm I am in the middle of researching the best type of blower/vac and line trimmer/brush cutter to purchase. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the electric motor types instead of the more traditional petrol, either battery-driven cordless or cord. Are they powerful enough, have they lasted a long time with regular use i.e. at least every 1-2 weeks? Re: Garden Power Tools - Electric vs Petrol? 2Jan 13, 2016 1:49 pm Electric is ok for very light work, whatever tool you are using. For eg what a pensioner might be doing around his/her home to maintain their salubrious gardens. But almost always anything requiring grunt, petrol engine is required. Re: Garden Power Tools - Electric vs Petrol? 3Jan 13, 2016 2:06 pm Use 36V mower and edger at our place. Weekly use during spring/summer and now over 4 years old and going strong. Our lawn is very healthy buffalo so the mower works hard. I think the issue of petrol vs electric is more in regards to size of yard rather than life of equipment Re: Garden Power Tools - Electric vs Petrol? 4Jan 15, 2016 1:31 pm Althom . I think the issue of petrol vs electric is more in regards to size of yard rather than life of equipment Re: Garden Power Tools - Electric vs Petrol? 5Jan 15, 2016 7:22 pm I'd challenge that. If I was still lving on my 850s mtr block I'd go petrol because battery life wouldn't allow me to do both lawns and garden beds without a recharge. On my current 400 sq mtr block I get both lawns and beds done on one battery. A thick buffalo lawn will make your gear work harder no matter the size when compared to a spindly couch grass lawn. Re: Garden Power Tools - Electric vs Petrol? 6Jan 16, 2016 6:32 am We have 3 blowers - 1 petrol, 1 electric, 1 battery operated. I would say the electric with cord gets used the most in our household. It has just as much, if not more, power as the petrol blower. The downside is that you need a really long extension lead to do the whole yard. The upside is it is light and easy to turn on with the flick of a switch so I can use it without waiting for my husband. The disadvantages of the petrol one are - it's too heavy, I can't start it (hubby can quite easily, I'm just no good at it), it's smelly, has to be filled up with petrol. All of these things mean only hubby can use it, a real pain as I'm home more and have a lower threshold for putting up with the never ending gum tree leaves all over the driveway. Advantage of petrol is of corse no cord. The battery operated blower is useless. It has no oomph and the battery runs out quickly. It might be good for keeping small areas tidy such as a deck or something but nothing more. Re: Garden Power Tools - Electric vs Petrol? 7Feb 16, 2016 1:32 pm I ended up going with Husqvana 2-stroke models for both as the Honda range was a bit out of my price range. I got them last week and tried them out on the weekend - very happy with the result! No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further.
