Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Nov 17, 2015 3:22 pm Decided to DIY a fence in the street boundary our home 10m long 1.2m high. Would like to make it of timber posts and horizontal timber slats. I am plagiarising the looks from another house in the street. It looks like they chose merbau. I recently built a little deck out of treated pine and finished with Cabots exterior varnish stain (something dark-ish like maple colour). I find it looks great. Yes the knots in pine area little of a let down, but with a dark stain they are not in your face. Its being a year in the sun and it still looks like it was built yesterday. Given the results with the deck, I am inclined to follow the same approach to the fence. I would like to know if anyone has any comments about using different types of timber and finishes for a timber fence. I am most curious about choices that would be low maintenance. Re: DIY timber slat fence 3Dec 30, 2015 5:39 pm qebtel is right coconha, particularly as regards finishes; but if you have the energy to touch-up regularly and re-stain every 2 years or so, they look great as you say. Always use durable timber and galvanized fixings. Merbau is quite durable and a good choice. The uprights need to be very durable and coating the portions in the ground (in a tar-type product) is advisable unless mining grade CCA treated pine is used. Hope that is of some help and good luck. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair I mean, I install them/sell them for a living so I haven't done DIY, unless you count the first one I installed lol. (electrician by trade). Usually a 6-8 hour job for… 3 39558 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 11498 |
