Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Nov 05, 2015 8:44 am The drain valve on my water heater is dripping steadily (almost running). Is this quite straightforward to replace? Could someone walk me through what I need to do? I assume it dripping because a washer has gone rather than something more complex with the pressure on the rest of the unit. What's that name of this part? Doing a search of water heater valves on Bunnings doesn't show anything similar and if you can tell, this is new territory for me. Turning off the taps to the hot water tank, and releasing the pressure before you unscrew it (perhaps leaving a hot tap on inside the house, and turning off the power to the hotwater system. Please dont put a ptr valve in it as for starters you wont get it to fit. What you have there is a cold water relief valve.depending where you are as in state etc you may get away wuth out it. Thread tape uo new valve turn water off at the blue tap which by the way is incorrect tape as should be a non return valve. Main thing just turn the water off. You will loose bit of water out of the tank so depending hiw long takes you to remove old an install new. Dont have any other tap open when doing as that will allow air intonthe system and make the water gush out instead of gurgle out when you remove the valve Re: Replacing water heater drain valve 7Nov 06, 2015 5:58 pm I always fix these by just cleaning grit out from between the sealing rubber and its seat, thats all that ever goes wrong with these. For starters have you tried to open and close the valve rapidly many times in an attempt to clean it out? If that doesnt work, Take it apart. Good luck with it.
