Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Oct 02, 2015 9:51 pm My house has vertical 70 X 19mm tongue and groove weather boards, I am in the process of painting the house and found a lot of the bottoms of the weatherboards are affected by wood rot. They are approx 50 yrs old and are hardwood. Recladding the whole house is not an option as the expense in my case is prohibitive. It is only the bottom up to in some cases 60 mm of the board affected. My idea at present is to cut the bottom of all the boards around the house and inserting a horizontal board around the bottom, however the boards are fixed by nails approx 50mm from bottom. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I may be able to do? Re: Fixing wood rot in vertical weatherboards 2Oct 12, 2015 9:28 am If the rot isn't too extensive you could get away with using wood hardener. http://www.bunnings.com.au/earls-1l-woo ... -_p1585291 Re: Fixing wood rot in vertical weatherboards 3Dec 30, 2015 4:54 pm Hi Rayza1952, If you are certain that the boards are hardwood, that has been an excellent life... probably because oil-based primer was used (possibly even red lead primer so careful when touching them). Usually the splits in end grain allow the mould spores in... and sometimes the ends were poorly done in primer also. As saltbush steph said wood hardeners are possible if there is sufficient board left to house the filler, but oil-based primer is still required to the raw timber and over the hardener and filled fixings. The fixings are almost certainly into a row of noggings or the bottom plate, in which case it may be necessary to install another row of noggings right round the house and nail guns make this so much easier than by hand. Then the other board idea (over a flashing I suggest pushed up 50mm minimum behind the old boards and down to below the bottom of the bottom plate) seems a good idea: but as I said earlier, oil-base prime the sawn ends of the old boards and the new board all round and over filled fixing holes even if it is LOSP treated pine. Just my opinion, but any short-cutting and you will pay a heavy price.
