I wish to make the desk from particle board? then cover it.And would like a wood grain finish look. What materials should i use for this project and where can i purchase it (in NSW).I know what veneer is but can someone tell me the difference between laminex and formica Re: home office desk 4Dec 20, 2011 7:56 pm I think desks are always better with timber veneer. So much warmer and nicer. However, Laminex or Formica "plastic" will last a lot longer. Is it to save money because desks can be found very cheap these days. Some years ago I salvaged an old office desk that was dumped. It was that typical style with a metal powder coated frame with draws, side panels and of course a top. I stripped it down to the frame. Painted it with Hammerite paint and a friend cut me a top with bevelled edges from MDF and it was great. Cost me the paint and a few hours. After 5 years we moved house and did an office refit so I bought a quality desk top and it's still great. I see them dumped everywhere. That's what I thought when I first read this post. I bought my desk 1500w X 900d X 700h with a 25mm thick top for $100 from an office furniture place that does refits. Its chipboard covered by light grey laminate with black edging. It suits me fine. Especially large desks because you need someone else to hold one end, while screwing things together. Also, try to opt for a simple office desk. They are both plastic laminates used especially for countertops and furniture. They can make your office desk more durable and long lasting.
