I have 2 beautiful wicker chairs in need of some love. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have pics but not sure how to post here just yet....am a newbie to the Forum Re: DIY Painted Wicker Chairs - help! :) 2Jul 09, 2015 11:15 pm you dont want the paint to dry???????????? I'm going to assume you mean drying to fast and cracking. If the wicker is true plant material: The idea here would be to prime the entire piece of furniture with a simple oil based primer. Spraying using a HVLP pressure gun on a compressor is most suitable and will penetrate into the wicker and protect the organic material from deterioration, as well as sealing tannins and also providing a porous substrate for the final flexible acrylic coat to settle in to. This primer should be sprayed lightly and if done this way will give an exterior self priming acrylic better surface wetting properties and give a more uniform unbroken tighter cure. If the wicker is made from plastic fibres: A relatively thick coat of acrylic primer applied by brush followed by 2 coats of either: a. gloss water based enamel or b. gloss/semi gloss (not low sheen) exterior self priming acrylic Re: DIY Painted Wicker Chairs - help! :) 3Sep 29, 2016 3:14 pm Hi there, and thanks so much for your response. Yes, it has taken me this long to get back to you because no, I haven't yet sorted these chairs due to time-restraints and other projects on the go. Having said that, I am now ready to get started and very much appreciate your advice. I did mean 'drying out' as opposed to having the 'paint dry'. A bit awkward to sit on with wet paint....a sticky situation indeed! It is most definitely a natural wicker....but don't own a compressor gun. Are these something that can be hired from hardware stores? Otherwise, will look into the cost of purchasing one. Can't wait to get started. Will post before and after pics for sure.
