Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Apr 06, 2015 2:19 pm Hi again, This time I am trying to fix my steps on our home where a steel railing is attached to the brick/cement steps. As they are about 40yrs old, from lots of use it has cracked through the cement layer on top. What is the best way to repair this? 1) Should I use a screw driver and hammer drill to clean-up the area first so that new mortar will bond to it? 2) What kind of render/mortar/cement mix should I use to patch this up? I've only got a bunnings nearby. Once patched, I plan to repaint the top in a cream colour. Thank you for your help and suggestions! I would be drilling 2 -3 holes in the good concrete and setting chemset anchors with the bolt head well out into the repair area. Make sure you get a bonding agent to paint on the original concrete and follow the manufacturers instructions. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! If you don't stop the steel from rusting the repair will crack again. You really need to use a rust converter then cold galv to prevent the rust, then patch the concrete. All that will be hard to do with the rail in situ.
