Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jan 28, 2015 2:19 am I have a space around 4.2m wide and I would like to put in a double low picket gate, each gate to be 2.1m wide, with pickets 0.9m high and the widest that I can get the horizontal supports is around 0.6m. I have 2 extremely solid timbers to secure the gates to on each side and would like to use these, with some good quality, solid brackets. I have looked at the two options of bracing on a fully wooden structure and the option of building up a frame using steel patio tubing. I do not have metal welding or cutting tools and my limited experience of welding makes me shy away from that area. I would like to use treated pine members but am concerned that with all the strengthening that would go on may make the fence very heavy and even more susceptible to bending over time beyond what is acceptable for a gate. For this ratio of height to width I was thinking about verticals at the ends and one in the centre and diagonals from the bottom hinge up to the centre top and then from the centre bottom to the top non hinged side and then also tensioning cable on the other diagonals. Would 90 x 35 members be sufficient or would they create too much weight? Even if I overcome the sagging issue am I likely to have twisting issues over time with the fence? my last resort is to put down a sprung roller to support the ends, but that would not help any twisting issues and for some other reasons that is not my ideal solution. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks Re: Building a low, wide picket gate 2Jan 28, 2015 6:44 am I would be going to a local steel fabrication company to build a frame in square steel tube.
