I just noticed that there are a number of patches on one side of the house where the paint is bubbled and soft and underneath is gooey and brown, the larger spots the brown is actually oozing out (its not wet like water - its more gooey). This is the side of the house that gets the hot sun all day and the wood does NOT feel damp, though the water heater is strapped to that side of the house I cant see any signs of damp other than these patches. Is this some kind of rot? fungus?? damp issue?? Any idea on what it is and/or what I should do would be greatly appreciated Image: http://postimg.org/image/wrmn6bkjl/ (have never used this image website before - hopefully the pic stays up ok) Re: Help! - what is oozing from my weatherboards? (pics) 2Nov 20, 2014 2:51 pm Use photobucket so the image loads here instead of on a third party site. http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc455/stewiesno1/2014_11_20_11_10_47_zps56e2161b.jpg To me it looks like sap seeing as it is around a knot hole in your pic. Do you know what timber your weatherboards are ? I've seen something similar where the weatherboards were cypress pine which has a high sap content and the timber wasn't seasoned enough before they were installed. Stewie Re: Help! - what is oozing from my weatherboards? (pics) 3Nov 20, 2014 4:11 pm The gum veins around the knot, if there close to the surface your basically painting over a liquid. You can either cut the board out and replace it, or if you have router use about a 6mm wide bit and route out the soft spots 8-10mm deep, fill the holes with builders bog, shape, sand and paint and the problem should be gone away for a number of years. Re: Help! - what is oozing from my weatherboards? (pics) 4Nov 20, 2014 10:53 pm Stewie - thanks for the tip re. image upload - I should have remembered photo bucket! The timber type I am not sure because it was done before we bought the house. I am surprised this would be happening now? We have owned the place for 2.5 years now and the area that has this issue seems to be on boards that would be over an extension that would be about 15 years old???....would 15 year old boards suddenly start seeping? Could the heat have caused it??? That wall gets extremely hot. But I do agree that now that you both point it out it nearly has to be that. I honestly hadn't realised those were knot holes but now I think about it I am pretty sure ALL the seeping areas include knot holes... Silly question - what will happen if i DON'T fix it immediately? (now is a really bad time with a zillion other things taking priority) - will it cause damage to anything other than the paint?? (considering the boards have been there for 15 years) Re: Help! - what is oozing from my weatherboards? (pics) 5Nov 21, 2014 10:43 am Quote: I am surprised this would be happening now? Could the heat have caused it??? That wall gets extremely hot. It could be just a change in climatic conditions. High humidity coupled with an increase in temp. The paint may have broken down as it aged and more moisture has been absorbed overnight by the timber. As it heats up during the day it may make the sap expand pushing the paint off. (considering the boards have been there for 15 years) If the rest of the timber is OK it will just be those localised areas around the knots that bubble. Not major but just keep an eye on it. I'd leave it and look at a patch repair job when the weather is cooler around mid-autumn ( when the sap stops running ). Stewie That drawingโs in the old units. The sewer tie is 1.44m deep and 4.5m offset from left boundary however the levels were taken ages ago so the surface level will have… 1 3541 Hi there, long-time lurker but first time posting. I've bought a house 2 and a bit years ago and last year we had some major water damage on a converted pergola area… 0 5754 Yes, unless you are in a low intensity rainfall area or the area is protected from rain. Do you have access to NCC Part 2 or can you download it? I can email you a copy… 10 10353 |
