Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Oct 17, 2014 10:29 pm So i've always had a tile roof, and have had the convenience of being able to just move a few tiles to gain access to any part of the roof that i've needed. Our new place will be colorbond, and being a double storey means very limited access in some areas - unless we remove some panels. How hard is it to remove a panel? Can it be "peeled back" a bit, so I can access some of it, or does the whole panel need to come out? How hard is it to put said panel back? Any issues with waterproofing etc. We haven't even finished building yet, but I can see a few instances where I may need to access the roofspace. Re: Removing Colorbond roof panels 2Oct 17, 2014 11:31 pm Fairly easy to peel back sections of a colourbond roof, just undo the roofing screws all the way across. The further across you undo them, the easier it comes to lift it up. It can be a bit fiddly putting the screws and the panels back in to just the right spot though. Re: Removing Colorbond roof panels 3Oct 18, 2014 12:12 am You should have anticon under your roof sheeting, that would make it awkward to access the roof space from above. Why not install a manhole or attic ladder? I installed an attic ladder on the double storey area and a simple manhole on the lower single storey section. much easier than climbing on the roof and pulling off roof sheets. I doubt there'd be any houses that didn't have a manhole to access the inside of the roof. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Removing Colorbond roof panels 5Nov 09, 2014 3:15 am I agree that peeling backs sections is easy, though not as easy as moving tiles. You will have to undo the screws in order to get access. Once you get a hang of it, it should not be that tough. I have also installed a ladder in the attic and made a simple manhole in the lower storey. In the winters this is a better option than climbing on the roof. Do consult a professional on it, just to be sure. Re: Removing Colorbond roof panels 6Dec 14, 2014 3:59 pm Removing the sheets and getting them back in is pretty easy. hang onto any spare roof screws in case you blow some seals under the heads. It makes me wonder if people think removing tiles is easy, how many re clip them..... Re: Removing Colorbond roof panels 7Jan 18, 2015 12:45 am Your going to get an opinion based answer depending on who you talk to and what sort of experience or how capable they are. Removing sheets and that includes putting them back on can be easy to extremely hard, different houses vary. Unbolt all the screws and then also unbolt a few screws on the adjoining sheet metal so it allows for more play when your removing and putting the sheet back on. Do not do this if it is very windy. You can lift the sheet upwards without removing it, this is always recommended if you can get the job done without removing the whole sheet. When putting the screws back on you need to ensure the rubber seals are still on the screws and not shredded. If the seals are damaged it's a good idea to put a small dab of silicon on to improve the sealing. Remember to be safe and wear a safety harness if you have never done stuff like this before, many people have gotten seriously injured.
