Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Sep 21, 2014 4:59 pm We are a month away from settlement on our first home and my wife wants to paint the place before we move in. We have a 7 month old baby and a week to move in and tidy the rental and I am doing everything myself (removalists for heavy furniture though). My concern is that its a 4 bed 2 storey with double height walls in the living area and would be a lot of painting for basically one person to do while the other looks after bub. I think I would be better off moving in (complete with some wall scrapes from furniture) then painting one room at a time once we are in. Thoughts? Re: Paint with or without furniture. 2Sep 21, 2014 5:47 pm Personally, if the ceilings need doing then I'd do that before moving in (otherwise you need to cover all your furniture to be safe) and then anything that would be hard to get to later. The rest just do after you move in. Re: Paint with or without furniture. 3Nov 14, 2014 10:13 am We are in the same situ.. although have 3 kids! Given my impatience (lol) we are painting before we move in. In saying that though, whole house needs a paint from top to bottom!! We have extended our lease, so we will have exactly one month, to take possession, paint, move, clean and give back the keys to the rental. No way will you be able to finish in a week on your own! We are aiming for one room completed a day - and even I think that might be tight!! Good luck!! I agree with the above, at lease get the ceiling done before moving in! 1st Home Buyer Kristie AKA Krash Re: Paint with or without furniture. 4Nov 14, 2014 10:35 am 1 week? Good luck. if youre not a pro, it will take you considerably longer on average to do that size house. I'd then progress on to other more used rooms/more difficult to cover up rooms next. I'm sort of thinking the kitchen/lounge, then the bathrooms, and then all the remainder. We will go room by room in the coming months along with the mointain of other jobs we (wife) want done. Re: Paint with or without furniture. 8Jul 12, 2015 9:38 pm It's so much easier without, but circumstances may mean it's not possible. I like the idea of getting the ceilings done first if you are short of time. Ceilings cause more spatter and at least with walks you can move stuff to the centre of the room and it's not too much in the way, not the same with Ceilings. This certainly doesn't look good.
