Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jun 01, 2014 1:28 pm In my main bathroom the cornice is for some reason set about 6-8 mm below the ceiling on all sides. This creates a shadow of sorts, but the gap is now full of dust and muck and I would like to fill it in before repainting the ceiling. I think the easiest option will be to work some sort of filler into the gap which I can smooth off with a finger to leave a neat edge flush with the edge of the cornice. Bunning have countless products in the way of plaster repair, plus the usual fillers, and I have also thought of using cornice cement, assuming it is less likely to come loose. Then I have to think of how to apply it, whether with a caulking gun or a small trowel. I don't need to fill the entire depth of the gap, but just want to permanently seal it off. I would really appreciate any advice on what might work best for this job. (The entire bathroom will be ripped out and renovated in August, so I'm not worried about creating a mess.) Re: How to fill gap between cornice and ceiling? 3Jun 02, 2014 3:18 pm Why indeed? The bathroom renovation company will be stripping out the existing tiles, bath, loo, and basin. I am retaining the ceiling and cornice, and having the painting done afterwards, along with some painting in adjacent rooms. I contacted Selleys technical support today and their recommended solution to filling this type of long deep gap is to put lengths of foam backing rod into the gap, leaving about 5 mm which can then be filled with "No More Gaps". I will be giving this a shot. For the benefit of anyone else trying to do this type of thing, here is a link to the product that Bunnings sells: http://www.bunnings.com.au/gap-filler-r ... 0_p4061877 Re: How to fill gap between cornice and ceiling? 4Jun 02, 2014 6:29 pm has the cornice seperated from the ceiling? if so dont use no more gaps as its a gap filler not an adhesive. cornice cement forced into the gap using a 6" scraper then smoothed off before it goes hard. it wild bond the cornice to the ceiling as well you wont need to fill or sand. cornice cement does not sand very well by the way so if you need to touch something up use a filler. Re: How to fill gap between cornice and ceiling? 5Jun 03, 2014 3:05 pm mgillas that is way they were made back in the day. Ok just my opinion but I cedrtainly would not go to the trouble of renovating a batghroom and not do the ceiling and cornice. Especially one with that old fashioned type finish. It will always look like a fixup job. It's easier to just rip it out and put new sheets and cornice. Then the whole bathroom looks new. To save money you can rip everythjing out yourself then the bathroom mob just has to resheet and tile. Much easier and a far better end product for very little price difference. 2 7535 The photo is not really clear but to me it looks like twist in the cornice.
