If I want to change the color of the timber, can I just apply another stain on top of the old stain? Can I apply stain on top of the new oil? Many thanks. Re: Can I apply oil on top of stain on outdoor timber deck? 2Dec 30, 2013 7:33 am Maybe try a small sample somewhere it can't be readily seen. I'd say you'd have to prepare old wood first - but might depend on what's there - ie state of wood. Not sure what you mean by timber oil. Many types. Was it previously oiled - or painted ? Re: Can I apply oil on top of stain on outdoor timber deck? 3Dec 30, 2013 7:53 am Thank you for reply, Saint. The timber is hard wood timber, and it was previously painted. Timber oil is just regular oil which cover the surface of timber, protect it from water and uv. Saint Mike Maybe try a small sample somewhere it can't be readily seen. Re: Can I apply oil on top of stain on outdoor timber deck? 4Dec 30, 2013 11:42 am If it was painted you may find the timber has been sealed so the oil won't penetrate it will just sit on the surface and probably go sticky. If it was stained in a grey tone the oil will likely still take but you should give it a good clean first. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Can I apply oil on top of stain on outdoor timber deck? 5May 28, 2014 3:20 pm Once Painted the timber is sealed. Oil needs to penetrate into the wood grain and if coated the majority of the oil will sit on top. Stain also will not be affective for the same reason as it also needs to penetrate. For a quick easy job thats low maintenance your far better off painting it with a Decking Paint. If your heart is set on the stained oil look, Sand it down to bare timber, apply a decking cleaner then Stain Away! Finish off with the oil for protection! Oils and stains look fantastic although tend to be high maintenance. Hope this helps! I'm about to put down some Merbau.
