Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Dec 08, 2013 3:17 pm Hi, I have another topic on here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=68481&p=1110676#p1110676 This was in regards to installing an ag drain to deal with a wet lawn and under-house I thought due to clay soils etc. I was planning on tying the silt trap into an existing downpipe which goes into the ground I assumed into storm-water. Today I dug around this pipe to figure out how I was going to connect it and found a bunch of concrete around it, it was very thin maybe about 5 cm. Once I got through that I can see that the PVC downpipe is just sitting over an existing terracotta/clay pipe which I hope is storm-water... (can anyone confirm from photos?). I have a feeling that this is actually the problem with the wet ground in that corner and the sogginess underneath the house. Would that be a fair assumption? Or would it be unlikely that a small gap like that would affect anything? Could a blockage be the culprit forcing water up out of that connection when it rains? Here are some photos: http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k237/ ... photo2.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k237/ ... photo1.jpg Any ideas on how to go about fixing it? Should I cut out that segment of clay pipe and replace it with PVC? If it were all outside the house and didn't go underneath I would consider replacing the entire length with PVC, but that might be a bit hard. Any advice would be great. Thanks Re: Downpipe going into old terracotta pipe - wet lawn 2Dec 08, 2013 3:55 pm There is no way of telling from the photos. Usually stormwater is run in 90mm and sewer in 100mm but apart from finding where those pipes terminate you won't really know for sure. Does your stormwater make it out to the councils gutter or do you have a pit on your property ? Either way whenever I've come up against this sort of problem before I've recommended to the client that all the pipes are replaced because you can't guarantee what the previous owners have done. Some clowns install the downpipes going into the sewer and worse. Stewie Re: Downpipe going into old terracotta pipe - wet lawn 3Dec 08, 2013 4:08 pm Hi thanks for the reply. I am not sure about the stormwater I cant see a pit anywhere though. The only thing I noticed was it didnt smell... I assume an open sewer pipe would smell a fair bit? I might need to just get a plumber in. I guess the question is, if possible to give an opinion, would be could this be causing the wetness? Or does something like this usually just run off into the pipe and not cause excess moisture in the soil? Its very wet in that area when it rains, and I went under the house today and its quite soggy all the way from that area to the front of the house.
