Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Nov 13, 2013 5:59 pm Hi, I'm new to the forum here, but joined as I need some advice as I believe I've got an expensive problem on my hands. Background; 3 years ago I bought a home in Darwin, NT that came with a salt water pool. Around this pool (and quite literally all around this house) are sandstone pavers. This looked very attractive and bloody awesome during the wet season as the sandstone looks incredible when wet. Now, I didn't know and still don't know squat about the maintenance of sandstone pavers, but within two years of living here I realised that salt has a catastrophic effect on these pavers. The pavers started to become pitted and soon began to lose the smooth finish the pavers once had. Leaving me with a sand-pit around the pool. Sand was everywhere. I went to my local Bunnings, sought advice and bought a sandstone sealer. Went home and pressure cleaned the pavers with fresh water and allowed to dry over night. The next day, pavers were dry and I rolled on the sealant and all seemed to be great. I might add, that this was during the dry season and humidity was very low. 1 year on..... the problem is back and worse than before. The problem areas have returned and even have new ones that were previously unaffected. Again I have a sandpit. Can anyone give me some advice as to how I can repair this? This is a link to my SkyDrive public folder. It has 3 photos of the pavers... 1. Close up of the effected paver.... 2. What it should look like.... 3. An overall of one side of the pool. http://sdrv.ms/18qTdkF Re: Sandstone Pavers - Corrosion 2Nov 14, 2013 12:10 pm Whoever built the house and pool didn't choose the pool or pavers wisely. Sandstone around a saltwater pool is asking for trouble unless you are very pedantic about choosing quality sandstone and then sealing it properly to start with. Being a porous stone it would have sucked up copious amounts of salt and it is now coming to the surface. I think you may be up for an expensive replacement job. Any sealing of the pavers now does nothing but seal the salt in too. Stewie I had 28m2 of engineered pavers laid six months back and it was difficult to find someone not taking the pi$$. Internet suggested it should be $85-100/m2 to lay them.… 3 12358 Appreciate that Chippy. I won’t do sand under pavers and will connect all up under pavers, however I was going to do: 1) Roadbase compacted with manual hand tamper 2)… 10 18551 |
