Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Nov 12, 2013 1:34 pm I'm having this problem with my walk in closet. I notice moulds are forming in walls and in some of our clothes especially if not worn often. Our walk in closet is next to our bathroom. How to manage this? is the location adds to the forming of moulds? (beside a bathroom) Re: Moulds in walk in closet 2Nov 12, 2013 6:28 pm How old is the house? What it it made of? What materials are the walls, is there insulation, what ventilation is in the bathroom, etc, etc? What is on the wall adjoining the closet, is there any water pipes in that wall, is there a shower against the wall? Is the mould worse in any particular area? The more detail you can describe the quicker we can focus in on what it might be. Sorry your going through this, been through it myself, very frustrating. The separation of the bathroom from closet is a cemented wall. shower is on the other side of the wall. with the pipes im not sure of the connections..so what did you do? Re: Moulds in walk in closet 4Nov 13, 2013 10:25 pm We had to renovate but that was cos there was a leak. I am still not sure if yours could be a leak or humidity. Is there an exhaust fan? What do you mean about cemented walls, do you mean plaster walls? Is the mould worse in any particular place like worse on the ceiling or worse on the wall against the bathroom? Re: Moulds in walk in closet 5Nov 14, 2013 12:02 pm You need to establish whether there is a leak in the wall first. You should also install some ventilation like a fan or vent into that closet as there are no windows or doors through which cross flow ventilation can occur. If the house is reasonably insulated there is possibly nowhere for any humidity inside to escape to resulting in the mould. Stewie there is an exhaust fan in the bathroom, but nothing in the walk in. how can we minimise the humid air inside the closet? i think humid area can aggreviate moulds Re: Moulds in walk in closet 8Nov 20, 2013 6:27 pm tamarind JazzyJess We had to renovate but that was cos there was a leak. Re: Moulds in walk in closet 10Nov 23, 2013 11:33 am You ought to work out WHY before spending money and effort on installing things. My gues, its only a guess, but my guess is you've got no insulation. I've seen uninsulated ceilings drip water in winter when there's a heater going. Hi jazzy, we thought of that too since this is an old house we have to find out the history of the renovations as well. Putting a heater, exhaust fan or a dehumidifier are some of the options we want to do if ever the renovations will take long and expensive Re: Moulds in walk in closet 12Dec 01, 2013 6:19 pm tamarind JazzyJess You ought to work out WHY before spending money and effort on installing things. Like I said, find the cause first. We're purchasing a dehumidifier in the walk in plus the exhaust fan in the bathroom which we will keep running whenever we uses the room and the bathroom. Sometimes we leave the door open. We're also cleaning the area little by little where molds are forming..unfortunately there's only one small window in the walk in. In the past we also experienced the same problem. Our closet was just next to the bathroom and we also live in very wet area, so the first thing we did was to buy dehumidifier. We use it for other rooms too and it is really effective. The exhaust fan also helped us and right the situation is much better. Only from time to time ( once in a few months) there are some build ups but we remove them right away and it's OK. Hope these steps will help at your situation, too. Yeah it did helped us too.. it has solved the persistent mild damp in the walk in closet. if clothes were left in my clothes rack for several months they would start to grow mould. I left our dehumidifier, i have ion612 running for 8 hours on high mode while at work and it collected 1.8 litres of water.
