Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Nov 10, 2013 1:33 pm Hi, I'm looking to install a manhole in our ceiling. There are no existing ones there as our theory is that they used the existing one for one of the ducted air vents. I've looked at kits and know what I want, but I'm not sure what the next step is to choosing the right size. I'm not sure of the spacing between joists and can't exactly go through the non-existent manhole to check haha. What would be the best way to find out what size I need to get. I was looking at the 600x450 or 600x600 depending on what will work. Is it possible to use the ducted vents as access to the roof, or are they clipped on from within the roof? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Re: Installing a manhole. 3Nov 10, 2013 8:23 pm Unfortunately it's not a tile roof, and I'm not too sure on lifting up a sheet just yet. Don't want to risk an opening for leaks. Especially since we had one already during winter. No offense intended, but if this is your excuse, you dont sound like a DIY type of guy. Maybe get a tradie in? Bottom line is you have to get into the attic space, and make a decision where to cut, then mark it out. It will be easier to use a saw up there too, instead of cutting from underneath. Size wise , 450 - 600mm is ok. you dont need a kit, some 4x2 nogging and some moudling for the interior side is all you need. Re: Installing a manhole. 5Nov 11, 2013 9:01 am Try using a stud finder to find where your truss chords are or the ceiling joists, that will give you the spacing and where to start cutting ceiling (don't cut any roofing or ceiling timbers) Foremost Building Expert in Australia, assisting with building problems/disputes, building stage inspections,pre-contract review advice for peace of mind 200 blogs http://www.buildingexpert.net.au/blog Re: Installing a manhole. 6Nov 11, 2013 9:39 am I am with qebtel on this one..... get a tradesman in to do the necessary, they can also advise best location etc. This is not where your D.I.Y journey should start from.... I only say it because of other things currently happening that are more important than spending money on getting someone in to fix a leak. Got to get my priorities in order so I'm not wasting money where it's not needed. Like I've said in my intro post I've already taken out the old oven and dishwasher, which meant a hole in the kitchen wall leading to the back yard, 1.5m by 800mm. Along with various other things, electrical/plumbing related. So I'm not afraid to tackle jobs that leave risk, but those are all jobs that can also be temporarily resolved if needed. I was more so just looking for alternatives before going through the roof to do it, just in case I was over looking something simple.
