Thanks Re: how many coats 2Sep 26, 2006 4:50 pm I would start with a sealer first with new plaster.
Then it should be 1 undercoat, and 1 top coat. The amount of top coats to use will depend on the strength (hue) of the colour you are painting. Some require 2 top coats and a special coloured undercoat. Have fun! Re: how many coats 4Jul 11, 2007 4:46 pm The general rule of thumb for moderns paint is:
Bare (not previously painted) surfaces – paint with one coat of undercoat follow by two coats of finish paint. For deeper colours extra coats might be required to give a good coverage. Re: how many coats 5Jul 11, 2007 6:35 pm Just a question - are you talking gyprock or fresh solid plaster.
My undertsanding is that fresh solid plastering is best left for several months before it's painted. Is that correct OLP. Steve Re: how many coats 6Jul 12, 2007 7:12 am No, just let the solid plaster dry thoroughly and paint.
I read in some magazine (I think it’s the last issue of Handyman) that render can be painted while wet, but I wouldn’t want to try it. Modern materials are designed for quick construction. Waiting few months wouldn’t make much sense to me – those days people are not waiting longer then a couple of weeks for basement to set. Why would you do it for plaster?... Re: how many coats 7Jul 12, 2007 9:54 am I was told the solid plasterer (who was well respected in SA) told them to not paint it so it could fully dry out properly - otherwise your sealing the moisture that is in the plaster into the wall.
It was not my house - so I do not know what was done but I do know it was a brick/sandstone wall that was being solid plastered. Steve Re: how many coats 8Jul 25, 2007 11:04 am Make sence to me.
But it dries in few days - you can safely paint after that. Re: how many coats 9Jul 29, 2007 10:09 pm Just curious, on my builder's brochure it says:
"Choice from Taubmans Custom Colour Selection chart. Two coat system with 3 internal colours and 2 external colours. Easycoat acrylic low sheen to walls, flat Tradex ceiling white to ceiling, Hi Dura enamel gloss to woodwork and doors." So does this mean that they will only put 2 coats of paints for the plaster/walls? Re: how many coats 10Aug 03, 2007 4:31 pm Sounds to me your builder is quoting two coats only.
A new surfaces you need three coats - one undercoat and two final coats. If it's previously painted - you can go away with one-two coats (depending if you want just to freshen it up of to paint properly). But still - if there are any repair, patches, bare areas on woodwork after sanding you should have them spot sealed with undercoats before putting a final coat. So these areas wl get their three coats. One more comment - for the property you want to leave in or rent consider using semi gloss, not flat on our walls. Flat looks cool when new. But it leaves glossy polished marks when something scratches the wall. You also are rising to get those marks is you try to clean the surface – flat is basically not washable. In long spaces, like corridors - it's really obvious and looks seriously bad. Semi gloss is the best to use on walls - not to glossy, and you can clean it as you like. Re: how many coats 11Aug 03, 2007 5:03 pm Three colours internally……including the white for your ceilings.
Two coats only, undercoat and top coat. 2 coats externally and only 2 colours. I agree with Ol'Painting, 2 coats for new walls in not enough. I use semi gloss all the time, its soo much easier to clean, and it reflects light back into the area.
