Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jul 31, 2013 6:08 pm Hi all, I'm new to the forum and home DIY. I have a problem with back exterior door starting to get rot on the bottom. The door is a honeycomb type and cheap to replace, however I'm interested to know how I can prevent rot in the future ? It currently has a weather strip but it seems that during heavy rain, water seems to get into the door. Is there some type of sealant I can use or will a few coats of paints suffice ? Cheers Richard Re: Exterior door preventing door rot 3Jul 31, 2013 10:52 pm As per JB1's suggestion... A solid core ( for security ) external grade door is what you need primed and top coated with at east two coats on all edges and faces to protect the timber is what you need. Now that is a long time ago) where they fixed a rotting exterior door. The problem was a cheaper hollow core door was used instead of a solid external door. Another thing is builders don't necessarily bother with painting the edges that you cannot see. Like the other posters said the best thing to do is replace it with a proper external door, which is what we're planning to do with ours. We thought about somehow sealing it more effectively but by the time we fix the existing damage we decided it wasn't worth the effort.
