Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jul 30, 2013 3:46 pm Am hoping someone can offer me some help! Noticed the grey grout on my bathroom floor had some black patches. But no matter what I do I cannot get rid of this black. Have cleaned and scrubbed. It doesn't seem like it is wet or damp. There are no obvious leaks and the shower recess floor is not affected. Have checked outside the bathroom and below. These black patches have appeared in the areas I would generally dry off after a bath/shower. My shower has no ventilation. But I have never had a problem that I could not tackle with some elbow grease. I have always used natural cleaners but am now resorting to bleach, including one that is intended for outdoor use. But I am desperate. I want to sell this place. And there is no way I would buy a place that had a couple of black patches othe floor let alone someone else wanting to buy it. So any advice on how to tackle this would be appreciated. In the meantime I am moving out of here. Can't stand the smell of the bleach. Cheers Re: Grout going black on bathroom floor 2Jul 30, 2013 6:50 pm I think you can get a pen type of thing that you can use to brighten up grout, I think it actually paints over the grout- maybe try Bunnings or Masters. It isn't a long term solution but it might help enough to help you sell the place. I believe those pens are only for white grout between wall tiles. But thanks for the suggestion anyway. I don't know what I am going to do if I can't fix this quick! Re: Grout going black on bathroom floor 4Jul 30, 2013 7:55 pm Its only the grout though, not the tiles? I dont think that would stop anyone from buying the house... Put a nice fluffy bathmat over it :p - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013. Our thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=67954 Re: Grout going black on bathroom floor 5Jul 31, 2013 7:55 am It would have to be a couple of fluffy mats. It is as if the grout won't dry. It still looks wet after my applying the bleach last night. Have had fans on. Still not dry. Re: Grout going black on bathroom floor 6Aug 01, 2013 3:03 pm Fixed it! After trying every cleaning method, mould treatment and becoming concerned that I had a bigger problem, before I rang for the professionals thought I would try one more thing. So I went out and bought myself a cheap heater with a fan. Put it in the bathroom, switched it on and shut the door. Bingo! The black patches of grout are disappearing. Think perhaps all that cold and wet weather we had in the past, plus my slackness at keeping the bathroom floor dry after showering, lead to the grout getting damp and just not drying out. The bathroom is above the garage which is about 10 degrees colder than upstairs. Plus I havent had the windows opened all that much. The only sunny and warm days I have had to work. Should have tried the heater first. It cost less than all the bathroom cleaners and scrubbing brushes I bought! Re: Grout going black on bathroom floor 7Aug 01, 2013 4:58 pm You beat me to it as I was going to suggest a hair dryer instead. If you want grout that does not change colour when wet then the only thing you can do is colour seal your grout. Re: Grout going black on bathroom floor 8Aug 01, 2013 7:49 pm Thought of a hair dryer. But this heater is fantastic. Only $15 and it really heats up the bathroom. You can feel the warmth on the tiles. In fact the heater is so good I think I will go and get another one. Good for heating up a small area. I put it on intermittently through the day when the temperature in a bit lower. The grout is almost back to normal. It was only when I posted previously that the grout seemed to not be drying that I thought about it. I had a termite inspection recently and found higher than normal (for my place) moisture. No doubt due to all that rain and the cold spell. Plus my place being closed up alot more than usual. So I finally put two and two together and answered my own question! Re: Grout going black on bathroom floor 9Aug 02, 2013 9:23 am Despite the bathroom floor drying out it is obvious that I will be left with discoloration from this episode. I was worried that it was more than surface water but have had a look where some grout has come out and it is all dry underneath so it is just a surface problem. Would a grout recolour sealer be the go? Re: Grout going black on bathroom floor 10Aug 02, 2013 9:46 am Yes, once your grout has been colour sealed your grout will be 100% water proof so it does not change colour if it gets wet. We have thousands of customers who have applied it to there floors and they love the way it looks and stays that way for over 15 years or more. An important note; you have to make sure your grout is recessed below the tile by at least 1-2 ml to be able to colour seal your grout. Hope this helps. Re: Grout going black on bathroom floor 11Aug 09, 2013 11:26 pm I used to have this problem until I colour sealed the grout in our bathroom. Looks a little more attractive than bright white grout also. Had no idea about the heater/hair dryer tip, that's a great one.
