Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jun 27, 2013 9:34 pm I want to build a second deck below the one we already have The first one is on the 2nd storey and so the posts & concrete etc are already there. We are complete amateurs but because the base is there we want to give it a go. Our first top deck is made of hardwood but every 6 months we have to wash it off & e-coat it - which is a complete pain. so I've heard of modwood - I've had a look at the website and it looks like wood - has anyone used it? Do they love it / hate it / what are the pitfalls. I notice they also have a system which allows you to put the planks on without nails - this also appeals to me (husband not convinced) Anyway - any advice gratefully accepted Re: Attemping to build new deck - has anyone used Modwood? 2Jun 29, 2013 6:03 am Hi there. I have used another brand of composite decking and after three years I am still very happy with it. Only maintenence is a pressure wash every season to keep it looking great. Mine also fixes with clips under the deck so no nails or screws to become an issue. No painting or oiling required either. Just bear in mind that the colour will fade about 25% from new and then stay the same. Overall I am really pleased with the material. Good luck! Re: Attemping to build new deck - has anyone used Modwood? 3Sep 03, 2013 9:20 pm Have you seen/ felt the Modwood? I looked at it also, but after seeing it at a home show, decided against it. I could scratch it with a fingernail! Even the guys spruiking said they wouldn't use it for a deck. Recommended it for fencing/ screens etc. as little maintenance. Re: Attemping to build new deck - has anyone used Modwood? 5Sep 04, 2013 12:16 pm RenovationsGalore Hi Oz. I have not heard a word from the OP since late June. Another one of those polite posters. ... nice. Yeah don't you hate that! Question for you though - which product did you end up using? I looked at all the competing products at the last two home shows this year and I only found one that looked a bit like wood. The others all looked awful - the dreadfully fake looking wood grain that was endlessly repeated wouldn't even fool Mr Magoo. Don't remember the brand I looked at but I have a sample at home. Keen to know if it might be the one you used as we will be looking at getting decking done soon after handover and I really like the idea of low maintenance but not at the expense of appearance. Re: Attemping to build new deck - has anyone used Modwood? 6Sep 04, 2013 12:21 pm Hi RenovationsGalore. I too am interested in knowing the brand of modwood you used and/or could you pretty please post photos of it? I am in the process of exploring getting some decking done but it's in a fully exposed area and I'm concerned about the maintenance issue. I promise to respond to anything you can tell me Re: Attemping to build new deck - has anyone used Modwood? 7Sep 09, 2013 8:19 pm Hi guys. I guess if you get past the fact that it really won't look the same as wood then you may like it better. Mine seems to be a fairly generic product from china. Its got a reversible profile on it. Mine came from a company called decklife in Gosford but they do not supply any more. lion king flooring in Sydney sell it for about 45.00 per sq Metre but it only comes in 2.2 metre lengths. My supplier had 5.4 metre lengths. I am just about to replace the handrail with a pool fence and extend the deck to include an above ground pool. Anyways, here are a few pics. They look very similar to each other, have concealed fixing, tuff scratch resistant top layer and very good warranties. Modwood is terrible. I've only ever done one deck in it at the owners request and would never do another one. Scratches very easily and it's difficult to work with. I build a lot of decks and still prefer the look of natural timber, but for long term practicality the composites are in a world of their own. Having said that, my decking at home is timber. I don't mind oiling it once a year and still like that natural look and feel under foot. I went home and checked out the sample piece of the type I liked from the show and wouldn't you know it, it's Modwood! lol It's still not something I'd look at and think "mmm that's nice looking timber.." I'm torn. And if as above it marks easily then I think I'd just rather have timber, even given the maintenance hassles. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. I will probably go with modwood for my vertical screens. But then they wont be getting scratched by furniture etc. Hard to see from my pics but my board does have a ribbed profile. My kid rides his bike and it gets a few marks on it but they usually come off with a pressure clean. You can lightly sand the material as well. 100% agree with you on the look.... I much prefer a gorgeous aussie hardwood deck. But I am busy and a lazy bugger..... the composites are just much easier to look after. Its a matter of your priorities. Good luck 2 Those span tables can be pushed a little for a low deck if you dont mind a little flex.
