Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jun 03, 2013 8:30 pm Hi everyone, I wanted to put up a 26 mm x 1.5 metre wall shelf on a bedroom wall in a ground floor unit block. It does appears to be brick or concrete. The other side of the bedroom wall is the common wall for the outside stairwell common area. So when drilling through using the hammer drill if managed to get through 25 mm then it seems to be hitting a metal plate. I have drilled a few more holes at the same height but 1.5 meters from the original hole and again it goes as far as 25mm before hitting a steel plate. 25mm is just not deep enough to support shelving so should I risk using a metal drill bit and continue drilling through the steel plate ? I have a lot of reservations doing this ? Not even sure if legally i'm allowed to do so with contacting Strata. Anyone know what the steel plate would be used for ? The unit complex is only 11 years old ? Do I have any other options with to get shelving on there with 25 mm deep holes only ? Cant seem to find dynabolts that are that short :< OR Should I just count my losses , give up and repatch the holes and repaint the wall. Thanks saintlypaul Re: metal plate when drilling through wall 2Jun 03, 2013 8:59 pm There are plenty of wall anchors that will fit into 25mm and should hold >100kgs each... provided the wall will take it. Seeing as the building is only about 9 years old, Im guessing that isn't brick and more likely concrete or a concrete block possibly filled with concrete. I can't imagine any reason there would be a steel plate that big on what is your side of at least a 200mm wall, since you are hitting it at about 25mm in. So I'm guessing you are drilling through 25mm of the finish surface and then hitting the concrete which might feel like steel. You either need a better drill, or bit, and then push harder and keep going! Cheap Chinese drill bits can also make concrete feel like steel! I use Tramex moisture meter and it will tell me instantly if the wall is cement sheet or plaster or masonite but most people dont have the equipment. 5 7086 Fine with me... just let 'em step in with some affordable (but good) gear... 12 5485 yep sounds good make the footing bigger to to allow for the pipe in the middle 3 7320 |
