Turned the tap on to drain the pipes and the water just kept coming and coming. I left it for an hour and it was still going! Not fast but not just a drip either, could probably have filled a drinking glass in less than a minute. I checked I had the mains tap off as far as it would go and it was. What would cause the water to continue flowing if the mains is off? Should I be calling a plumber, or the water corp, or nobody since there is no actual leak. I managed to change the washer anyway, with the water coming out while I did it - just did it quickly lol (and turned the bath tap on as well to make the water even slower)...but obviously shutting the water off completely may need to be an option at some point?! Re: why won't the water stop? 2May 06, 2013 6:07 pm The same happened to me. The meter tap needs replacing. Report it to the water authority as your mains can't ne shut off and they will fix it at no cost to you. Before mine was fixed I would open a tap closer to the meter (front garden tap) to slow the flow while I replaced the washer in the bathroom tap. 6 11470 That sucks! Hope it all works out.
