Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Apr 22, 2013 4:24 pm Greetings My partners place, which is a small apartment, has 2 downpipes that come down from the eave, and into the garden. These downpipes are not connected to the guttering Instead the guttering has a hole drilled into it and a circular spout welded to it, to drain the guttering Problem is, water falls 8ft to the garden, splattering everything including the front door, which has started to rot at the bottom My solution was to attach pipe/elbows etc to the spout and run some pipe (with fall) to the existing downpipe (cut a hole in downpipe, feed circular pipe into it, seal with no more gaps). Thereby rainwater from the guttering still flows out the spout as per design, but doesnt flow into the garden and spoil everything. Partner says during a storm, it sounds like a person taking a long wee after holding on for as long as possible. Anyone see any issues with this? Would seal everything with sealant so as water flows to intended destination. Pipe size? Current spout size is about 40mm, not having measured it Cheers Justin Re: down pipes 2Apr 23, 2013 8:40 am jamt007 My partners place, which is a small apartment, has 2 downpipes that come down from the eave, and into the garden. These downpipes are not connected to the guttering Are you sure the downpipe offset section is not concealed in the eaves and enters the back of the gutter, as was done years ago for supposed appearance? Arfur Re: down pipes 4Apr 23, 2013 11:06 am Yes they were poor design and you couldnt tell when the section of downpipe in the eaves rusted out (or blocked as yours could be) until water started pouring out the eaves. You wont need to get on the roof just look for an opening in the back of the gutter. Yours may have been blocked off if the eaves section has rusted out and what you have was their elcheapo alternative Arfur Re: down pipes 5Apr 23, 2013 2:09 pm It sounds like the "circular spout" could be an inverted nozzle. These sit about 40-50mm high in the gutter and the water drains into them when the gutter starts to get full to prevent the gutter overflowing. Most drain to atmosphere as described. The downpipe fixing method that Uncle Arfur has described is no longer permitted by Australian Standards but I am not sure if the BCA still allows it. If you get a plumber in, he will have to plumb the gutter as per the existing regulations. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage.
