Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Apr 18, 2013 5:14 pm Recently I've been noticing hot water coming out yellow. It's not too bad yet but as compared to cold water, it is slightly yellow. I tried samples from kitchen and bathroom. They are both yellow. Is it a problem with my water heater? If yes, is there a way to clean it? It's a "Rheem" brand and I don't know if I can open it. I have no idea how old it is. I am thinking of turning the inlet water off and emptying the heater but I don't think it will clean it up completely. Re: Hot water comes out yellow. How can I fix this? 2Apr 18, 2013 5:21 pm I'm guessing it might be rust? If so, I don't think there's much you can do other than replacing your hot water system. Is the unit inside the house or outside? When the same thing happened to us, the unit (which was inside a cupboard in our laundry) starting leaking from its tank shortly after from one of the seams of the tank (which had all gone rusty), and the water actually made its way under the wall and into one of our bedrooms. Just something to be aware of, hopefully you don't experience the same Re: Hot water comes out yellow. How can I fix this? 3Apr 19, 2013 8:31 am sbryzak I'm guessing it might be rust?
