Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Sep 19, 2006 5:57 pm Hi. I need to replace the capping around the edges of my garage roof. The place was renovated in 1995 prior to our purchase. The current material looks like fibre cement - I'm hoping it's not asbestos considering the year of renovation but I'm not 100% sure. I've attached some pictures of the damage. Does anyone recognise what the material might be and where I should look for replacement? Asbestos was long banned then. But try to break off a peace and take it to the Bunning’s and also take your photos. They will tell you what is it and how to fix the problem if you want to do it yourself. Re: Repair Garage Roof Capping 3Jul 12, 2007 9:48 am Take a close look at the edge of the breaks. If it has little fibres hanging out (straight fibres, small diameter like hair, could be 5mm long poking out), it is asbestos.
Don't break off pieces. If you need to take a piece to someone for ID, use an existing piece and put it in a sealed plastic bag. The dodos at Bunnings wouldn't know asbestos if it bit them, unless they worked in the Wittenoom branch. It looks like an old profile so it could be asbestos. Re: Repair Garage Roof Capping 6Nov 01, 2007 6:33 am ![]() Replace it with a zincalume flashing or similar. Exactly. Just head to stratco & order some flasing in your desired colourbond colour. I did i to my old shed & it came up a treat. Just because it had reno work done in 1995 doesn't mean they replaced it - looks like all it had was a dulux reno (coat of paint) and could quite easily be asbestos based. Personally, I'd put colourbond flashing over the top & not disturb it any more than it already has. I have tried emailing them, hope the links work.
