Re: Repeated burst mains water, any plumbers? 3Feb 11, 2013 9:57 pm shorns76 split just above its joint to a copper elbow leading to the cold water intake on the HWS. Luckily it was reasonably accessible. Thinking I didn't have the tools (ie crimper) to fix it I got a plumber to come out. He replaced the split section using joiners fairly similar to those you'd use on your garden hose, which is fine but of course I could have done that myself. Anyhoo about a week later the pipe burst again, the old hose about 2 inches above the fix. Thus nothing to do with the plumbers work but how unlucky eh? SO this time I fixed it myself using a longer piece of new pipe and the clamps/fittings used in the previous fix. Job done. Until today when the old pipe, about an inch above the fix burst AGAIN. OK, you are talking about a pipe AND a hose. I have a suspicion that you might be referring to PB hose. If it is PB, then your reference to copper and crimping now makes sense. You are experiencing the same problem and this tells us something. Might have something to do with using the same fittings again...maybe; what do you think??? What fittings did the plumber use? Were they the same ones? You should have phoned the plumber rather than do it yourself...TWICE! PB hose has been a problem in the U.S. and the symptoms are as you describe. The splits have generally been traced back to improper installations where some plumbers used old brass fittings. The crimper must be properly calibrated as the hose must not be crimped too tight. Crimp PB too tightly and it can split and this will happen near the joint. This is what you have described as happening with your crimped "PVC pipe". Having had failures at one point, the entire install should be deemed suspect. My guess is that it was either crimped too tight (most likely) or the fittings are suspect. 3in1 Supadiverta.
