Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jan 24, 2013 11:39 am Hello, I'm a 1st time home owner looking for some advice regarding lintel repair. I own a early 20thc. sandstone and brick villa that has had windows replaced in the 1970s. The lintels between the windows and the upper brickwork are in some cases very rusted, in others rust is just coming through. I have heard that the rust can travel further back out of visibility and cause displacement of the brickwork. Is it possible to treat these DIY ie sand back, treat with Endrust and repaint, or is it advisable to get professional opinions and possible treatment or replacement? If so does anybody have any recomendations of who or what type of professional to approach for this? Thanks! Re: Lintel repair 2Jan 29, 2013 10:36 am If they have started to rust badly then you should remove them and replace with the appropriate sized galvanised lintel. Some may only have surface rust so sanding them back and treating the rust before repainting them may be all that is needed. Failing to replace the heavily rusted ones may indeed lead to brickwork cracking as the rust can exhibit quite a bit of expansion. Replacing the lintels is labour intensive as you have to prop up the brickwork above the lintel , remove a couple of bricks on each end and then remove the rusted one then install the new one and replace the bricks you removed. Narrower windows may only have a flat bar supporting the brickwork which is much easier to replace. Either a brickie or carpenter would be able to do this job easily. Remove as much or as little as needed so you can slip the lintel in. Stewie DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Hi All, Hoping someone might be be to provide some advice on my ceiling that needs repair.
