Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Dec 17, 2012 6:17 pm Hi guys, I know this is really basic but wasn't sure on the best way of tackling painting the fence. We are getting a brand new fence (finally) to be built tomorrow. It will be wooden, overlapping with the front pailings with a colonial top (popular design in my suburb on the Gold Coast) Had a look at the pailings and they are not all dressed - they are a little rough around the edges. Do I need to sand them? If yes what is the most efficient way to do that - would a belt sander work? Since it is new wood do I need to pressure wash? For the painting planning to use Dulux weathershild White on White. Do I need to use a primer? Can I use a spray gun (I have a cheap one in the garage I haven't used yet)? If spraying do I do one coat with a brush and one with a spray can and in what order? Thanks and look forward to hearing from you!!!!! Reno in Southport - QLD. So much work to do and timeline has already been pushed back!!! Still To Do - security system, security screens, tree removal (cocus palms), internal works, lighting, ensuite. Re: How to paint a brand new overlapped wood picket fence?? 2Jan 09, 2013 12:49 pm Hi Bella13, Some of my opinions: Sand it... I wouldn't bother. A rough look should suffice and you won't notice it in a few months. Also, how would you sand the palings in between? A general wash to free the surface of dirt etc is required. Painting. Check the tin for primer details or ask the paint expert when purchasing. Dulux Weathershield as an example is a self primer and can be painted directly onto bare surface. Spray gun is the way to go these days. You might need to use a thinner (check on the tin or ask the paint expert) to use in a spray gun although DULUX SprayFast Fence Coat can be used as is from the can. Two coats is the way to do it. Then apply the 2nd coat after the advised drying time. All in all, all of your questions can be directed to a paint expert when purchasing your paint. Generally they should be ex painters themselves. Thank you. That is really helpful.
