So many Qs, so I'll just number them ... 1) How long have you been doing this and has it been for every consecutive read/bill? 2) How does the power company inform you that you need to do a read? 3) How do you inform the power company of your latest read/results? 4) Have you received any warnings or issues from the power company that self reading cannot continue, or similar?? 5) Is it a problem if you do it on a permanent basis (ie. not just an ocassional self-read)? 6) Anything else? Re: Does anyone self-read their gas or electricity? 2Sep 21, 2012 8:52 am After having my hot water service stolen recently, I am about to move the fence line in front of the gas metre, which will mean gas and electricity are now in the backyard with the dogs. I dont really care what the power company thinks, ill send them a photo of the metre or then can make a appointment. Re: Does anyone self-read their gas or electricity? 3Sep 21, 2012 5:37 pm I always check the reading of my gas and electricity meters because I dont trust the meter reader, having had him stuff-up big-time in the past. The power company should advise on your account the approx date of their next reading. If unable to access your meter they should door knock to see if you are home. If you are not they will estimate the usage. Once when people were more honest, gas and electric retailers would accept the customer's reading if the meter-reader had estimated an account way too high. Sadly this no longer applies. Special meter readings attract a cost of around $30 -- $40 It may vary from State to State but power retailers will estimate your bill based on past average usage, for 3 quarterly readings, then the meter must be read to get your account back on track I have found an estimated reading is usually on the high side of what you have actually used. Retailers will not permit a customer to contact the meter reader and all complaints/enquiries must go through the retailer. Arfur Re: Does anyone self-read their gas or electricity? 4Sep 21, 2012 7:02 pm Thanks. Interesting stuff. Anyone else has any experience with this? I just noticed that I didnt mention our own experience .. so ... Our meter reader-man left us a note (twice in a row!) and I then sent them back both readings - and so far so good. I thought they would just estimate the usage (especially for the second time), and not keep leaving notes to self read?? Nice one That's why I'm wondering if I can just continue with this, and not do it just ocassionally. In fact, they couldnt get in because they were WAY late (about 2+ weeks) to read!
