Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Aug 26, 2012 2:48 pm Hi all - Was really hoping for some advice with an issue that I have with a deck that my neighbours have built. I have a sandstone house and the neighbours (who are on the upper side of an elevated block) have built a deck that runs flush against my sandstone wall. I have noticed lately that we are getting ALOT of mould & rising damp but had just put it down to being in an old house. However, I gave it some thought the other day and it has gotten alot worse since the deck was built. You can see from the photos below that all the run off when it rains runs up flush against my wall (the same location with the most severe damp). I don't wish to be in conflict with the neighbours, so I'm wondering for advice on how this could be best fixed/rectified. Does the deck need a small gutter leading to a drain or is there another way to move the water away from my walls? What is reasonable/what should I be asking for? Really appreciate any advice or tips. Or do you mean the small-ish sort-of-plywood(?) boards from the last pic?? If those boards are the "deck" you are referring to, what is the purpose of them?? Are they there only temporarily?? And where is the boundary? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Porous sandstone and run-off from a neighbour 3Aug 26, 2012 8:28 pm Yeh, it's generous to call it a deck. It's the wooden structure adjoining the stone step in the photo. This house is still under renovation so it's a work in progress. It will be a elevated platform when completed as walking up the stairs and to the right is an entrance for the neighbour. The sandstone wall (my house) is the property boundary line. Thanks! Re: Porous sandstone and run-off from a neighbour 4Aug 26, 2012 8:35 pm Could you simply slope (lift and pack under) the boards so they slope away from your house? (in which case the neighbour might get the same problems??) As for the imminent permanent solution - are you worried about that and what do the plans say? I know in our area, you have to make sure water from your property does not affect neighbours; a neighbour across the road had to put in a $70K system as part of their renovations. 7 6252 I had 28m2 of engineered pavers laid six months back and it was difficult to find someone not taking the pi$$. Internet suggested it should be $85-100/m2 to lay them.… 3 12408 I had a similar issue with my fridge not too long ago. It wasn't the same model, but the symptoms were pretty much the same: the compressor would start and then stop… 3 7549 |
