Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jul 31, 2012 12:53 pm Hi, first post so be gentle. We just bought an older (1960's) house in the outer suburbs of Brisbane. We know it has some asbestos in it, but it is all well maintained and we are not worried about that. However, we want to put in a new kitchen, with new tiles. The current kitchen has old vinyl sheet laid down. It looks old, but not overly old, so I'm not sure if it's been laid in the last decade or much longer ago. I pulled the metal rail off (that conceals the end of the vinyl at the entrance to the living room which is floor boards) and pulled up a little bit of the vinyl. The brand is LG (like the LG electronics brand, same logo and everything). The vinyl is glued to masonite boards using some sort of clear glue and the masonite is just nailed to the floor boards. I've tried to find anything on LG vinyl ever containing asbestos, but I can't find anything. Obviously, the route to take is to get it tested, but if someone can tell me that LG never made asbestos vinyl, it will save me time and money getting it tested! Thanks, Chris Re: Asbestos floor tiles? 2Jul 31, 2012 2:48 pm I would still get it tested. I had some eaves lining tested in SA, while I waited, and it cost nothing. Why not phone your local testing laborities and ask? Arfur Re: Asbestos floor tiles? 4Aug 05, 2012 4:43 pm cbell68 Hi, first post so be gentle. Thanks, Chris Didn't know LG did flooring. In anycase LG as a brand is reasonably new, up to 15-20 years ago they were called (lucky) goldstar. So if it is 100% LG in the current form you would be pretty right. Re: Asbestos floor tiles? 5Aug 08, 2012 11:41 am cbell68 I've looked around for some labs that do free testing in Brisbane and found no results. I don't think there is one here that can do that. Its been a few years since I had testing done here in SA and for all I know they could charge now, however its worth paying a few dollars to find out if something is going to eventually KILL you so phone and ask what they charge. Arfur What you are looking at is fibrous plaster, true gypsum, it is cast on horizontal beds with fibers included to give strength. I has no Asbestos in it.
