Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jun 06, 2012 1:31 pm Hi, I have 2 large couches each with 3 square-ish cushions on them 85x87cm plus backs . I was quoted around $2000 each to have them recovered etc. So I thought I would give it a go myself as pretty simple, boxy design. I can buy material for around $500, new endurofoam for around $1400 - so now I just need a seamstress to recover the cushions for me. Does anyone know anyone who will just sew these 'cushion covers' for me? As soon as one says the words 'upholster' they add a thousand bucks more when really, it is just a cushion cover!. Thanks Re: Seeking a seamstress / upholsterer in Melbourne 2Jun 07, 2012 3:06 pm So you were quoted $2000. The materials can be bought for $1900 plus there are upholstering costs to add, when you could probably buy something brand new for a little more. I must be missing something here. Personally I think it is great. How lucky we are to live in a diverse society where not everyone does exactly what you would do! Sorry Tracey I can't help you with your question... Re: Seeking a seamstress / upholsterer in Melbourne 4Jun 08, 2012 10:30 am The reason I posted what I did Lee75 is the re-upholstery jobs I had done previously failed miserably after a short time, despite being relatively expensive. If I choose to throw things away Lee75 and can afford to replace things that get worn and shabby, or I simply want a visual change that's my prerogative Arfur Re: Seeking a seamstress / upholsterer in Melbourne 5Jun 08, 2012 7:34 pm Hi Arfur $2000 each x 2 = $4000 My costs would be $1900 + cost of sewing the covers, even say $500 = $2400 compared to $4000 Plus I love my couches. When you remove the back cushions they are 2 x single beds (so handy when we get a family with kids visiting). They are 25 years old, the first couches we bought and the wood is still good / solid. The workmanship on the couches were great. I could take the easy way out an buy new stuff, but I am suspicious of all the made in china stuff and/or the cheap stuff you buy now from chain stores...nothing is made to last for years unless you go top quality stuff which costs around $4000 per couch! I have been wanting to do an upholstery course for years now....but never enough hours in the day.... I may just have to find the time!. Re: Seeking a seamstress / upholsterer in Melbourne 6Jun 09, 2012 12:40 pm I was right, I did miss something, the word each which they makes it a whole different scenario. Quote: I have been wanting to do an upholstery course for years now....but never enough hours in the day.... I may just have to find the time!. When I did my leadlighting course, a group nearby were doing upholstery and retensioning the strapping that supported chair springs. My course ended before theirs so I didnt get to see them sew the covers. Like most courses they taught the basics and if you wanted to do more then you had to purchase your own equipment. Would you have to add in the cost of an upholstery sewing machine? Arfur Re: Seeking a seamstress / upholsterer in Melbourne 7Jun 11, 2012 3:11 pm this is what I posted into the interior decorating page where I had posted same topic: Just to let you know that I was recommended to an upholsterer in Highett by a friend. So I had Ellie (a guy) from Ellies Upholstery around to quote. He offered very helpful, constructive advice. So bearing in mind I was being quoted $4000 to recover/replace foam on my couches, he quoted around $2400 using fabric he imports himself and a foam which has a 10 year warranty which he says will be good for 15 years plus. We went to his shop today, (354 Highett Road, Highett tel: 9532 0730). However we decided on a Warwick fabric instead which changed the price to $2640. So we will end up with virtually 2 new couches which will last another 25 + years, I am quite sure as we will now have reversible cushions and zip off covers which we can handwash. So I wont go the d.i.y route anymore! (having said that, he would cut and sell foam and fabric by themselves as well) but by the time I factor in time, effort, and whilst I did find someone who would recover the cushions, I never got around to find out THAT cost). So by the time I factored in all these things, it was I reckon, more cost effective to have it done professionally. In his shop, you can see furniture he has restored himself and which he has for sale. Actually just seen he has a website...www.elliesupholstery.com.au ... so hopefully this helps someone.
