Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 May 30, 2012 10:14 pm Hi all I've just purchase a 60's/70's flat and under the carpet and lino (oh i'm dredding!) floorboards. My partner and I are going to attend doing the sanding and polishing ourselves and I've been getting mixed reviews on if we stain or not. I'm leaning more towards just vanishing but what is the best way to get the best result, is it by doing 3 coats of polyurethane then a waterbase? I'm getting so many mixed reviews but I just want the best result (high gloss ideally) and durable! Thanks so much everyone jenjen Re: to stain or not to stain 2May 31, 2012 9:40 am 8jenjen8 My partner and I are going to attend doing the sanding and polishing ourselves Ive seen this type of work attempted by amateurs and the final finish was so bad they ended up getting carpet squares and hallway runners in an attempt to hide most of it. I think its definitely a job for professionals. Arfur Re: to stain or not to stain 3May 31, 2012 4:24 pm Have you done it before. Agree with above poster. I've seen lots of disasters. It's not as easy as it looks. And getting it done properly is not that expensive. I wouldn't stain personally but it depends on the house I guess. I like the matt finish (but I've only polished floors in rentals). High gloss marks are more noticable. Re: to stain or not to stain 4Jul 31, 2012 6:08 pm Well after much encouragement from you both I ventured out to complete my own satin finish! A job well done for a first timer and certainly no need for carpet squares and hallway runners, even though I've seen them down on professional jobs so really all you need is patience and encouragement to take on the project yourself! jenjen Re: to stain or not to stain 5Aug 02, 2012 5:17 pm 8jenjen8 Well after much encouragement from you both I ventured out to complete my own satin finish! Glad it turned out well. We didn't say you couldn't do it. Just trying to give you warning that it's not always as easy as it looks. For the price I pay I wouldn't bother but each to their own. Next time you ask for opinions I won't bother to reply.
