Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 May 15, 2012 8:06 pm Hi all, i am new here however have read a few posts and thought why not join So fiance and i are going to attempt to build a deck and pergola at the back of our new home approx 6x4.5 we already have a little concrete pad out the back sliding door which we will be going over rather than breaking up however am a little worries about getting it level over the concrete. Is there anyone out there that can tell me what we need to put on our list of materials costs etc? thinking going for merbau so 27m2 how do i know how many mtr lengths we would need? so confused Re: Building deck & pergola 2May 15, 2012 8:31 pm For the quantity you will need 260 lm plus about 10% waist. So 280lm would probably do. You will get it in various lengths from 1.5 - 5.1m. Depending on how much fall is on the concrete pad you can just lay 70x35 treated hardwood battens straight on top and secure them with gal dyna bolts. You can use plastic packers if you want to take some of the fall out of it, just means you'll need longer bolts. Re: Building deck & pergola 3May 23, 2012 9:27 pm If you are building a 6m by 4.5m deck you are looking at: Timber Bearer - 2/140x45, 48mtrs @ $5.85 Cost $280.80(2 x 140x45 F5 TP laminated) Joist - 90x45, 67.50mtrs @ $3.85 Cost $259.88 (90x45 F5 TP at 428.6mm centres) Decking - 90x19, 313mtrs @ $4.85 Cost $1,518.05 (90mm wide board with 5mm gap) Cost for timber $2,508.73 Screws & Support Decking Screws - 10g 50mm, 1,534screws (4boxes x 500screws) @ $60.00 box Cost $240.00 (2 screws per joist) Supports - 300x90 pryda stirrups, 16 supports @ $8.00 Cost $128.00 Concrete - 300x650 holes, 16 holes Concrete Req 0.74m3 @ $340.00m3 Cost $249.98 (0.74m3 concrete delivered) Screws & Supports $617.98 Total cost $2,676.70 See if that makes sense. Re: Building deck & pergola 4May 25, 2012 3:27 am You could get a pergola/deck specialist to measure it up and sell you the timber and 'attempt' to erect yourself, however if you are a novice at home improvement you may find it beyond your capabilities, make a thorough shambles of it and have to pay more for someone to rectify it and make it legal Arfur Re: Building deck & pergola 5Sep 04, 2012 10:49 pm Hi melgav Just wondering how it all went if its done? If not, truthfully if I was going to build a deck over an existing slab, I probably would have opted for the option of installing the joists straight on to the slab (or onto leveling packers). It would be a similar construction as installing timber floor onto a concrete slab where they use "battens". This would also cut down on the height required for the deck structure as I'm guessing it is only one step down from the house to the concrete slab. Also if you think you are capable of doing it I say go for it, there would be no greater satisfaction then sitting on the deck drinking a few beers and telling your mates you built the deck your on. Besides I'm sure you have a mate or one of your mates mates that could give you some pointers if you need them. Between that and home one you'll be fine. I say go for it. But just don't forget the golden rule, show us the pics once your done. Good luck! I want to build a decking to the drawn shape outlined in black.
