As I expected, snapping the tile after scoring with the tile cutter is proving difficult. Is there a trick to this, or is the trusty grinder the tool for this? Mrs Mozz Re: HELP - Advice needed on cutting tiles 2Apr 18, 2012 1:25 pm To try and cut that little off will be hard! You can try with a normal cutter being careful but will probably fail more than not! I think clamping the tile between a bench or similar with a piece of wood on top maybe better! The idea would be to clamp so when you run the grinder along the wood the blade is in the right place on the tile and is not hitting anything underneath! That way you should get a nice clean straight cut! Use a smooth diamond blade and follow the blades instructions re dry or wet, dry is probably better for your grinder unless it's designed to work wet! Just remember to stand clear, wear ear, eye and breathing protection! The tile could shatter if you go to hard, so best not to stand where it would probably go! 2 Re: HELP - Advice needed on cutting tiles 3Apr 18, 2012 3:42 pm I have cut several 10mm strips off my 340mm porcelain tiles using a smooth edged diamond blade in a small angle grinder. Sit the tile flat on a piece of board, so the tile is fully supported. Run a light cut as a guide across the tile, then run the grinder backwards and forward along the cut with light pressure so the tile is cut at an even depth until all the way through. Soon it will part in one piece. It may take a couple of practice cuts at first but dont rush it, trying to cut it in one pass with a heavy hand. Arfur Re: HELP - Advice needed on cutting tiles 4Apr 18, 2012 4:18 pm Thanks stormjr and arfur. After trying a few different methods, my best results were by doing the following: * scoring the face of the tile * grinding a groove on the reverse of the tile to `3/4 tile depth * placing tile in bench vice, supported up to line with some timber each side * snapping off the thin strip This gave me a nice crisp cut edge.
