Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Mar 28, 2012 9:01 am Hi, I have a plan to make better make use of the space in my garage, however just want to check that I will not cause any issues to the wall I am going to hang the storage solution. I will be building a steel frame that will extend 1.2m for the wall, sitting 1.2 meters from the ceiling. I will be running a steel batten down the 1.2m from the ceiling to the shelf, attaching this batten to the studs, and hanging the self from this. There will be a diagonal support from the top of the wall to the end of the shelf to provide vertical support. I am just concern that the weight of the shelf plus the items stored on it will put too much strain on the wall, and risk deforming the wall. The wall is a standard internal wall with wall studs every 400mm. How much weight can I hang off the wall before being concerned about the structure frame? Re: Hanging Heavy shelving off internal walls 2Mar 28, 2012 1:19 pm If your making the steel frame yourself, then just buy enough steel and make it freestanding, use some heavy ply for the shelf and load it up till it bows, then you don't have the worry of deforming your walls. Plus you can move it around later if you want Re: Hanging Heavy shelving off internal walls 3Mar 28, 2012 2:20 pm Hi, under a normal plan, this is exactly what I would do, however the idea it to take no floor plan away from the parkable area in the garage. By making it free standing, or protruding down to the ground at the extreme of the shelf, this takes up space for the cars. Re: Hanging Heavy shelving off internal walls 4Mar 28, 2012 5:19 pm Fair enough, you could run a piece of rhs 35x60 or something along the beams or whatever they are called in the ceiling, then esentially hang the shelves from some threaded rod as an option. Then you'd just need a small hole through the ceiling for the rod. You could then secure the back of the shlves to the wall with some angle to help spread the load. I fitted some shelves to a corner of my garage by fixing some 50x50x5 ally angle to the 2 walls, sat the shelf on that and then put a corner post in between each shelf, but it still used the floor as a bearer for that corner.
