Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Feb 13, 2012 10:45 am Hi, First post here, be gentle I've got an old wheel rim, I want to fix it to my outside wall to hang my garden hose off. It's a brick wall. What would be the best way to attach it to the wall, using dynabolts or screwbolts? Thanks. Re: Fixing a wheel to a wall, for the garden hose 2Feb 14, 2012 1:34 am It will look really ugly compared to the hanging brackets one can buy relatively inexpensively from hardware stores. As you would most likely fix through the rim flange (where the tyre seals) I think dynabolts may not be as effective being extended so far out the wall, so I think a screwbolt and plug, which would allow for easy removal for painting should the need ever arise, or you get a bit house-proud and sick of looking at junk hanging on your wall. Personally, I would have a re-think Arfur Re: Fixing a wheel to a wall, for the garden hose 3Feb 14, 2012 6:41 am It's a very old Buick wire rim. It actually looks very nice. I was wanting to put bolts right through the middle, i.e where the wheel would normally bolt to the axle/brakes of a car...or what ever part it attaches to. So I'll need long bolts. Re: Fixing a wheel to a wall, for the garden hose 4Feb 14, 2012 11:20 am The easiest may be to mark out the wall with 2 or 3 points of fixing. Drill through and set in some gal threaded rod that will stick out a bit past the finished surface of the wheel. Use chemset or silimar to set in the threaded rod. Then cut off the threaded rod the the correct length to finish off with a couple of dome nuts to look good. I would use M10 or M12 rod to give plenty of strength. Re: Fixing a wheel to a wall, for the garden hose 5Feb 14, 2012 12:21 pm Rod of almost any sort will bow down under the weight. An 'L' bracket bolted to the wall with the rim hanging off of it would probably be the best. With a small lip on the end of it to stop the rim falling off, or drill a hole through the top of the rim and bolt it down to the L bracket. Re: Fixing a wheel to a wall, for the garden hose 6Feb 16, 2012 5:21 am With the weight of hose, with some water, plus the rim it would need to be one hell of an 'L bracket'. Now you have explained things a little clearer and IF you are handy and IF you go for the long bolt idea you will need a spacer (timber of steel) firmly bolted to the wall and the rim attached to that, which should minimise the bolt sagging. Or perhaps a substantial U shaped bracket, deep enough to reach the rim centre, with a fixing tab each end, fixed vertically to the brickwork Arfur Re: Fixing a wheel to a wall, for the garden hose 8Feb 16, 2012 10:16 am Uncle Arfur you will need a spacer (timber of steel) firmly bolted to the wall and the rim attached to that, which should minimise the bolt sagging.
