Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jan 07, 2012 8:53 pm Hi, Our house is a little over two years old now and I've only just discovered that the architrave above a sliding glass door is being "pulled" away from the wall. We have vertical blinds and the tracks are attached to the architrave and I think the weight (when they're open) combined with a small child who likes to pull on them has caused the problem. From what I can see, the architrave is only attached with a couple of nails so my options as I see them: * Insert more nails, particularly around the attachment point for the vertical blinds * Use screws with wall anchors (because I can't see any studs to fix the screws to) * ??? I'd like to keep the architrave "aesthetically pleasing" but if I need to attach brackets or anything else to support the weight of the blinds, I'm open to ideas. Seeking some help. Re: Re-attaching architrave - looking for ideas 2Jan 07, 2012 11:52 pm When you say 'the architrave above the sliding door' I assume you mean the piece of timber trim the sliding door track is attached to? If so it seems the nails aren't holding the weight you (and your little one) are putting on it. I suggest using screws into the wall studs, which you should be able to find either with a stud finder or by tapping the wall until it sounds solid. The studs should be each side of the opening then at 450 or 600mm centres. If the opening is load bearing you will a timber lintel over and it will be easier to find and fix to. Another stud finding tip is to use a 2mm drill and drill a hole into the gyprock immediately above the 'ave, where it wont be seen, where you think the stud should be. Don't try to attach just to the plaster as Ive seen this done with heavy drapes and the youngster sustained a serious injury when the plug and a patch of gyprock tore out of the wall Arfur Re: Re-attaching architrave - looking for ideas 3Jan 08, 2012 7:18 am Thanks Arfur, The sliding door track is attached to what I would call a frame - the architrave I'm referring to is the timber trim that is physically located above that frame (of the three "pieces" of architrave, there is one either side of the frame and one along the top). Sorry if my terminology is incorrect or my explanation isn't that good! I'll have a good look in the light of day to see if I can see a stud because I don't like the thought of the entire vertical blind assembly coming off with a chunk of gyprock.
