Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Sep 25, 2011 4:03 pm Hi all, I have a question for anyone in the know, we are currently building our first house and appear to have selected the wrong color mortar in our color selection, we noticed this this weekend on a visit and with most of the brick work complete. The color selction was set to "Natural" which they are using a light yellow sand and the natural grey color of the cement mix, problem is our bricks are cream, we really needed something lighter. Does anyone have any tips or chemicals, acids, brands etc that we can use to lighten or bleach the joints? Not too fussed if it reduces the mortars life we just want it lighter!!! Any help will be appreaciated, thanks!! - Matnbridge Re: Lighten Mortar Color? 3Sep 25, 2011 5:09 pm Don't panic....yet!!! My bricks are cream (PGH Lithgow) with natural mortar and looked terrible until completely dry. Depending on weather give it a couple of weeks, then once the bricks are cleaned they will look even better. Re: Lighten Mortar Color? 4Sep 26, 2011 4:50 pm Ok they were only laid 2 days before writing this, i'll give it 2 weeks or so, once they are cleaned.. excess mortar removed etc... i'll re assess and come back here to let you guys know if it was ok or not!
Re: Lighten Mortar Color? 5Sep 26, 2011 4:59 pm Don't worry, a lot of people go into panic mode at this stage, then the mortar dries to it's proper colour and along comes the brick cleaners and it gets saturated again. Re: Lighten Mortar Color? 6Sep 26, 2011 5:25 pm Oh cool and amazingly enough... our bricks chosen are also PGH Lithgow!! so i feel a little better... have you previously uploaded any pics of it? if so please provide a link as i'd love to check it out!
