Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Aug 20, 2011 6:27 pm i am installing a new light fitting into a very old house, the light fitting has 4 terminals, when is colored green so that's the earth, one terminal has a "L" next to it live i guess. And another two which i assume one is neutral not sure what the other one is, I always thought there was just three, active neutral and earth. Another dilemma i have when i took off the old light fitting it had 3 cables consisting of 3 red, 2 black and one white wire. The three red wires are all wired together and where not wired to the old light fitting, the two black (wired together) and one white wire where wired into the old fitting. So how do i wire it into the new light fitting that has four terminals, i know the green is left empty as i don't have an earth. i assume i just use the two blacks which are wired together and the one white, but that's two wires and i have three terminals excluding the earth ?. I tried different combinations and some did nothing, one the light was on permanently, or the other lights did weird things lick flickering, i hate old house wiring help please. Re: Light fitting. 2Aug 20, 2011 6:35 pm Are you kidding, that's how people get KILLED.$200 for an electrician maybe i have been a bit harsh electricity can be fatal Re: Light fitting. 3Aug 20, 2011 6:41 pm It is fatal, and may end in electrocution with a heart attack immediately, or hours after the shock, or worse still a house fire that takes more than one life. Old wiring insulation just enhances the risks. Please don't attempt DIY with mains electricity. I know times are tight but its not worth your life. Re: Light fitting. 4Aug 20, 2011 9:13 pm As the others have said get a sparky in, it is illegal and dangerous for you to do it.
But just to contain your curiosity the 4th terminal is generally there as a loop point, in fact in your second example the 3 red wires should probably be wired into this terminal. It goes nowhere, but just provides a neat and safe place to tie loose actives together.
