Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jul 14, 2011 12:30 pm I have a timber house on beachfront with gal. steel posts (1m high) and bearers. The prevailing salty trade winds are taking their toll on anything metal and I have been crawling under the house to try and maintain the posts and bearers which in parts are showing signs of advanced rusting. Here is what I'm doing to try and keep the rust at bay and I would welcome any comments of how to improve my rust protection technique: 1. sand back the worst bits of flaky rust 2. paint any remaining rust/surface rust with rust converter (Wattyl Killrust) 3. Mix 50:50 Dulux 1 Step oil-based primer with Penetrol and paint everywhere there is access 4. Paint treated surfaces with White Knight Cold Gal 5a. Surfaces in view - acrylic paint to match house colours (Wattyl Solagard) 5b. Surfaces not in view - coat with Lanotec or maybe Penetrol (undecided) The top of the bearers are hard to get at but have surface rust. Should I just spray Lanoted or Penetrol on these to try and slow down any rust? Any assistance greatly appreciated as this is a dog of a job I don't fancy repeating too often. Re: Rust repair & prevention steel posts/bearers 2Aug 03, 2011 7:41 am Another way to prepare is to sandblast. I bought a cheap little sandblast kit at one of the auto spares shops and connected it to my 10cfm compressor. You have to buy dry sand in bags and it throws everywhere, but it removes the rust down to white metal even if it is slow. I found it better than sanding and I used it on my car for rusted areas. You’re on the right track, wire brush in a grinder then a zinc rich epoxy primer then a top coat of some sort, like a waterproofing membrane. Raising the concrete would… 1 7030 if l cannot get a sandblaster would a sander with sandpaper be better then a wire brush 4 7343 That just protects from further rust, l want first to apply a rust converter or rust killer to kill the rust thats there, whats the best one for galvanized steel 2 7502 |
