The main offenders for dirtying ceilings are electricians, A/C installers and anyone who uses the manhole to accesses the roof space. What concerns me is your described 'gritty' feel of the finished test-paint, or didn't you prepare the surface at all? Or have a dirty/cheap/perished roller? Dirty brush?
