There's so much rust on them that they've caused divots in the iron. I used Ranex Rustbuster after removing the bubbles, but I cooked it too long and there's white powder on them now. I've tried to remove the powder with a damp cloth and then a dry one. The white comes back. Should I be concerned or simply paint over them with primer then paint? The company does not recommend a zinc based paint but that's different from saying it's prohibited. Will the rust bubbles just come back if I do use a zinc based paint with a primer? I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle as the strappings continue to get chewed up. Re: Removing Rust/Painting Iron Strappings Under House 2Feb 09, 2011 4:33 pm Could these strapping be gradually replaced one at the time with galvanised steel? Can they be cut with angle grinder? I say that because you only see the surface and not underneath that could create at lot of problems in the near future. Steel is steel and still rusts (carbon steel content) unless it is of a non corrosive grading but I doubt there is its cost would be expensive. There are some chemicals available to remove and coat rusts but I doubt they would work right in this case You’re on the right track, wire brush in a grinder then a zinc rich epoxy primer then a top coat of some sort, like a waterproofing membrane.
