Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Feb 06, 2011 7:53 am Hi everyone, our ceiling has caved in in yesterday. This happened in living area and dining area of open plan kitchen. Our house has been recently built as we are due for a 3monthly inspection from our builders -simonds. Unsure if this was due to the wild weather in Melbourne on Friday night or due to some pre existing issue. What we found was our ceiling structure is still in tact however because of the moisture the insulation wool got heavy forcing the plaster ceiling break. We didn't notice any cracks or dampening of the ceiling before this happened. Would it be an insurance claim or the builders responsibility as the house is less than 5 months old?also anyone know how long does it take to fix the ceiling? Re: Caved in ceiling due to moisture...help! 3Feb 06, 2011 12:07 pm Thanks Onc_artisan for your advise. I have already taken photos as well as a video shoot of the damaged area which has a time stamp on it. Also have noted my observations (whatever i can recall). We already called up the insurance people and we were told that they'll get in touch in about 72 hours, which is not until tomorrow. As usual builder people not available during the weekend. so we'll have to wait until tomorrow anyway to get in touch with them. My only concern is how long does it normally take to re-plaster the ceiling in such cases. Just being mindful of the weather as we might get some rain this week and hopefully it won't cause any further damage. Re: Caved in ceiling due to moisture...help! 4Feb 06, 2011 12:31 pm I think I'd be looking at the cause(s) first ...likely a combo effect caused the issues/cave in. The repair seems pretty straight forward so a week or 2 of tarpaulan hire could be in order. SES might do the job if you ask nicely and give them a 'box'.... though they might be over whelmed atm.
