Re: how to repaint a garage roller door 2Feb 01, 2011 9:14 am Regular house paint may crack. If you got an automotive paint it should hold up to the flexing. Any type of paint for metal would be more suitable. Re: how to repaint a garage roller door 3Feb 01, 2011 9:52 am What is the door made out of? Metal, Plastic, Wood? If it is metal or wood: First of all, sand the whole door, just enough to roughen it up slightly, clean with a rag and water to remove any dirt, then clean thoroughly with something like turps or thinners (this will remove any grease or oils. The next step is to undercoat (I would use either a 3 in 1 acrylic or an oil based undercoat). The final step is to do 2 coats of topcoat, however: 1. Regular acrylic house paint (as long as it is an exterior product) is perfectly fine, they are designed for weatherboards that flex a lot so dry rubbery (even more so in the heat) but you will need to use a good undercoat first. 2. The problem with exterior acrylics are that because they stay rubbery they can stick if up against other surfaces (i.e. If using on a door, the door will stick to the door jam), but for a roller door, this should not be a problem 3. Exterior acrylics (in low sheen or matt) are not very washable and tend to hold dirt, so using a gloss is a way if improving this situation, however from my experience, the acrylic gloss exteriors seem to stay so rubbery that they feel like they have not dried properly (especially on hot days) 4. You could use a High Gloss Enamel but these dry very hard and can crack with expansion, they also don’t last as long outside as the water based paints do 5. An alternative is to use these new acrylic enamels, they dry hard like the enamels but still have a little flex in them. They also don’t last as long as an exterior acrylic Hope this helps Current status: Busy making the house our home Built PD Francis 29 on our 576m2 block at Reflections in Tarneit Reflections Estate Thread Our Build Thread Re: how to repaint a garage roller door 4Feb 06, 2011 3:00 pm Good info Wizard. just wondering if you've repainted your own garage rollerdoor, and whether it's help up okay. I've got a garage roller door, made of metal panels. it's a few years old, and looks neat. The problem is that it's black, which look slick and modern ,but in summer it just conducts heat (west facing) and turns the garage into an oven. So i'm keen to change the colour to something much lighter, in an attempt to reduce the garage temperatures. Re: how to repaint a garage roller door 5Feb 06, 2011 3:46 pm Hi B1,I did my roller door[32 years old] about 12 months ago.I used colourbond paint from bunnings, went from paperbark to classic cream three coats.Door was in very good condition no rust etc,all i did was a good wash down with a soft brush and sugar soap.I used a paint brush, unless you get very close you wouldn't know it wasn't powdercoated.[or what ever it's suppose to be] Re: how to repaint a garage roller door 6Feb 07, 2011 9:58 am Pattycake, that sounds like you're on the money with the colourbond paint. I like the idea of using a paint specifically for colourbond fences - which sit in the sun all day and heat up alot more than timber or brick. Thanks for the top tip. These paints pattycake4 is referring to are not paints that are made for Colorbond, rather they are made to match the Colorbond colours, don't think that they will stick perfectly to Colorbond just because the can has Colorbond printed on them. They are an Enamel paint that match the Colorbond colours so the proper preparation methods should still be followed b 1 Good info Wizard. just wondering if you've repainted your own garage rollerdoor, and whether it's help up okay. I have not painted a roller door myself, but I have been in the paint industry for many years so I know what should be done. There are preparation methods that should always be followed and from my experience, you can choose to not follow these steps, but it can mean that all your hard work will be in vein because the result can be peeling, blistering etc. Most people don’t follow the right steps, and in most cases, the paint sticks fine, but in some cases, it fails, and the process of fixing a failed paint job is costly and very time consuming. The moral to this story is choose the preparation methods and paints carefully, the wrong advice or products can spell disaster. They used a brush (if you look very closely you can see slight brush marks) but it looks as good as a new door, 12 months later the paint still looks perfect. Re: how to repaint a garage roller door 9Feb 22, 2011 5:31 pm Its all in the preparation. Use scotch pad or similar to key the surface. Something for the paint to hold onto!.Degrease , Use a quality exterior paint. I prefer solver duragaurd. Brush or spray it on. Will last for ages Re: how to repaint a garage roller door 11Apr 14, 2011 10:53 pm Hi we had the painter who repainted the rest of the house paint two garage doors- i didnt watch the process but he cleaned them, washed them, treatedthem or someting and then he sprayed them - one went from green to woodland grey and the other from green to paperbark- will post some photos in next few days. they look good and hopefully they last- the painter said they would so i presume i take him at his word. Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10246 |
