Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jan 14, 2011 8:40 am I have a 1920s house which has a moulded cornice on the barge board just below the corrugater tin roof on the outside of the building. The timber is Australian cedar. I have painted the timber over the years, but this year decided to remove it and give it a freshen up! The timber has been out in the weather for almost 90 years, the acrylic paints used and time, have left the timber feeling quite dry. Should I use, say linseed oil, or something else to give some moisture back into the timber? The back of the timber, against the barge board, is not painted, only the curved front facing the outside. I was thinking of applying the linseed oil to the back of the timber. Any assistance would be welcomed. Re: Rejuvinating Australian cedar timber outdoors 2Jan 19, 2011 12:20 pm If you are going to use any oil on the under/back side of the boards then you will need to use an oil based paint on the other side. Other wise when the oil seeps into the board it may push the paint off the other side and bubble/peel. If you are goint to the trouble of removing the boards to clean and oil them you may as well paint both sides. That way the board will be sealed and the paint will have less chance of peeling. Re: Rejuvinating Australian cedar timber outdoors 3Jan 16, 2012 10:51 pm If I'm trying to get some life back in timber I've started using a product called Qstrip from Quantum. It will remove all old oils, paints etc from the timber and is completely green. I agree with oiling both sides but I don't see why you would paint it! Good luck mate! I’m restoring all my 40yr old windows and I want to install seals around the casements. I’ve sanded back and oiled the frames with sikkens. My plan is to box up inside… 0 6519 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15923 Thanks Simon, I guess I'm no concerned with the volume of the noise rather that dead and hollow sound and feel that is associated with floating floors. But I'm not sure… 3 6162 |
