I am a building novice and would like some advice with a drainage problem. At the end of my undercover patio is a small ditch (between the end of the patio and a shale wall) which fills up with water when it rains. I have dug the ditch to discover a unslotted Ag Line which is used to carry the water from the drains on the patio roof. Would I be right in thinking that if I replace this unslotted Ag Line with slotted Ag Line it will help carry the water away and solve the pooling problem, or will the water just run straight through the Ag Line and continue to pool? Why would they have installed unslotted Ag Line in the first place? Is there anything else I should be aware of when doing this job. Thanks for any help/advice given. Re: Advice Required Drainage and Ag Line 4Jan 09, 2011 6:55 pm Hi Have tried posting pictures but the forum will not let me (as the quota has been reached apparently). However, in answer to other questions. At each end of the Ag Line it is attached to the down pipes from the patio roof, which then goes into the waste water pipe (via a couple of other downpipe attachments). There is no perceptible slope, however the other down pipes seem to drain, so they must work. The remainder of the pipe work is under the patio. What specs would I need to be aware of if changing for slotted Ag Line. Thanks. Re: Advice Required Drainage and Ag Line 6Jan 09, 2011 7:03 pm that sounds like just a stormwater pipe and they are normally not slotted AFAIK.. but I'm not a plumber so post some pics and aaron will be able to advise.. Re: Advice Required Drainage and Ag Line 7Jan 09, 2011 7:17 pm Have tried attaching from Photobucket. Unfortunately I had already shrunk the image to fit, so not sure on the quality. As you can see it is flooded at the moment so the pipe is floating. The ditch is about 18 inches wide and about 12 inches deep. As mentioned before the pipe connects to the two down pipes and then on to other down pipes and then waste water. Was thinking of replacing it with a slotted Ag Line and covering with drainage stones ( and some underneath if required). Thanks for time. DJ Re: Advice Required Drainage and Ag Line 8Jan 09, 2011 7:25 pm 1. The exposed storm water pipe clearly hasn't been connected properly. It should be properly covered, 100-200mm below ground level. 2. If you replace this storm water pipe with a slotted ag pipe, then the run off from the roof will not drain properly into the storm water, it will leak out into the ground and make the pooling problem worse. Looks like what you need to do is... - either install a separate slotted ag drain to pick up the excess ground water and connect it to the storm water via a small pit. - or, install a small strip drain along the edge of the paving to pick up any run off or ground water, and then connect that drain to the storm water. Either way, you still need to cover the existing storm water pipe. Re: Advice Required Drainage and Ag Line 9Jan 09, 2011 7:38 pm Thanks for the prompt reply. Does that mean then that the water in the ditch would not drain away if it was a slotted pipe. Someone said that more water goes into an Ag Line than comes out of it, and surely a lot of it will drain away down the storm water pipe connected at the down pipe. As more water enters the ditch from the shale wall rather than the roof would it still not be more advisable to replace with slotted Ag Line and cover with drainage stones. There is not really the space to carry out the work you suggest. Open to any suggestions. Thanks again DJ Re: Advice Required Drainage and Ag Line 10Jan 09, 2011 7:44 pm You could try and replace it with a slotted ag drain and see how it goes. You're governed by the existing storm water points. You'll have to prepare the area properly by digging a suitable sized ditch... - lay at least 50mm of crushed rock or quarter minus below the ag pipe, allowing for a slight fall towards the closest storm water point. - lay the ag pipe, this should connect straight into the existing storm water bends and use blue solvent cement and priming fluid which you can buy from Bunnings or a plumbing supplies. - lay another 50mm minimum (more if possible) on top of the ag pipe. - back fill with soil, preferably not clay soil. Re: Advice Required Drainage and Ag Line 11Jan 09, 2011 7:47 pm DJVaughan Open to any suggestions. Is the pipe leaking anywhere, especially at the joins (check the whole length)? What's at the bottom of that ditch? Also hard rock? Or soft soil? Not sure if just concreting that ditch would help (obviously, taking care to slope it to where it's better) ? You'd probably be safer to put in a strip drain anyway (I mean even into the concrete). My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Advice Required Drainage and Ag Line 12Jan 09, 2011 8:32 pm Thanks for all the help. Think I will try and replace with slotted Ag Line and do it as advised (thanks for that). Do not think that concreting will help as the water will just run off into other areas. Thanks for all the help.
