Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jan 05, 2011 11:01 pm Hi All, Our external balcony, which is a 125mm 40 year old slab supported on four sides, is experiencing hair line cracks on the underside where pieces of concrete have fallen away revealing rusted mesh (seems NSW tradies have been dojee since the ships came in - mesh is only a few mm away from the lower surface of all 125mm!). I take it calling out the engineer is the way to go with this one? Is there a repair? - I can seal it from above, but is the rust able to be delayed? Has anyone here ever had to replace a concrete balcony? Thanks Steve Re: Hair line cracks and rusted mesh in concrete balcony 2Jan 08, 2011 3:32 pm I think you need to get an expert to have a look at this. Basically the problem is that the steel reinforcement should be about 40mm from the surface. With this depth of concrete the natural alkalinity of the concrete protects the reinforcement from rusting. It might be possible to get the reinforcement blast cleaned and then use sprayed concrete (shotcrete) to build up the depth of concrete on the underside but its not a DIY job.
