Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Dec 07, 2010 9:26 am Have holes in ceiling from old light fittings. What is the best way to correct this? Should I attempt this or get someone in? Who would you call if you want this done? Once holes are filled, want to install new ceiling fans to replace the old ones and paint ceiling. Should I get the new fans installed and then paint the ceiling? Paint now and then get fans installed? Or should I ask the electrician to remove fans, then paint and get new fans put in? Would appreciate advice as to what order to get this done. Re: Ceiling Patching and Painting 2Dec 07, 2010 9:33 am To fill the holes get some spak filler - in little buckets from your local hardware place. You squish it in using the spatula then let it go off. Once dry carefully use fine grit sandpaper to smooth over the surface so it is flush with the ceiling. I would personally be getting the sparky to remove and fit the new fans prior to painting as there may be more holes / marks to paint over. Once the new fans are up just mask off the connections and put plastic bags over the blades before patching and painting the ceiling. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Ceiling Patching and Painting 3Jan 05, 2011 10:02 am hey stratastruggler what id suggest for your holes in the ceiling depends on the size of them ... if they are the size of a fist or so you will have to place a backing inside of the plasterboard for the plaster to stick to, as when you overfill a ceiling with plaster it tends to sag and makes a nightmare for refilling. either way depending on the size you will have to fill it 2 to 3 times, then when your painting between coats check it again. what you will need is a compound called " Base Coat " for your first and possible second application ( depending on the size of the hole of course ) . now this product doesn't take kindly to sanding so try to keep it neat. also before applying the base coat knock in the out edges of the hole so it tends to feel rounded on the edges, this will ensure when u fill the hole you wont have any raised edges from the top layer of paper on the plasterboard. after you have base coated the hole you'll need another compound called " top coat "this is a much finer type of patching material and will sand down to a very fine and smooth finish. when applying it try to widen and feather the compound in relation to the original hole as this will allow for blending - in with the surface, when sanding the top coat i wouldn't recommend using sand paper, it would be best to acquire a sanding block as the grit is finer and allows for a even sand, try to feather the edges then work inward so that when paint goes on it will blend in neatly. the idea is when the paint goes on you cant see anything remember " its all in the preparation " as for the fan it doesnt really matter if you were able to get yourself a neat electrician. otherwise you would have to touch up some of the dirty hand marks but i would assume you would be using a ceiling flat so the touch up would blend in well. the main problem i have with installing a fan before painting a ceiling isnt the masking up its rolling the ceiling around the fan... hope this helps some Glenn Oh no! I would use a can of expandable foam ( there are some that will take render) then cut it back and render over the top 1 4143 Ain't that the truth! We used to have a tile roof and had it replaced with colorbond and suddenly everything throughout the entire house sounds louder! 4 6692 |
